A director general or director-general (plural: directors general, directors-general, director generals or director-generals) or general director is a senior executive officer, often the chief executive officer, within a governmental, statutory, NGO, third sector or not-for-profit institution. The term is commonly used in many countries worldwide, but with various meanings. (Wikipedia)
director general: the highest-ranking executive office in a large organization such as the CBI or the BBC (Collins English Dictionary)
Marco Elefanti, general director of Gemelli Hospital, said: “The high level of integration during the different stages of care and the timely use of information for the decision-making process put in perspective the concrete possibility of controlling processes and conveying modifications in an efficient and effective way.” (HealthCareITNews)
The title of managing director is sometimes used instead of the CEO title. This is primarily a British title used in lieu of CEO, however, and one that would be confusing in the U.S. The word "managing" sounds hands-on, as if the one with this title would be handling day-to-day operations. Since that's not the role of a U.S. CEO, the title of managing director would likely be misunderstood. (CHRON)
director general: a chief executive or administrator placed in overall charge of a bureau, department, or agency especially in a national government or organization with international orientation (Merriam-Webster Dictionary)
A general director is the highest executive position in a Russian company, analogous to a US chief executive officer (CEO), or a UK managing director. The position exists for all Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) legal forms (e.g. joint stock companies (AO) and limited-liability companies (OOO)), except for sole proprietorships (IP).
