With traditional funding markets closed to many European financials in recent months, more and more banks have resorted to borrowing against specific assets on their balance sheets. Such collateralised borrowing, or ‘secured funding,’ ranges from covered bonds, a centuries-old type of debt and a mainstay of European markets, to more covert and controversial deals such as ‘extendable repo’ trades and ‘liquidity swaps’ struck with pension funds or insurers.
